La Machina – The Liverpool Spider

September 7th 2008

We had a visit to Liverpool, the European Capital of Culture to experience La Princessa, the Spider. Due to the afternoon event being cancelled, we took in the visual delights of the Liverpool Biennalle including ‘the Joyful Trees’ and Richard Wilson’s ‘Turning the Place Over’ which are both fantastic works of public art.

We gazed upon the spider attached to the derelict tower block and go very excited when the puppeteers walked past us through the crowd and then promptly abseiled from the roof down to manipulate this huge mechanical arachnid.

La Princessa

What skill! What engineering! But what a lack of theatre. It was all spectacle, which was fab, but for us it didn’t have the emotional impact of the Sultan’s Elephant and the girl by Royal Deluxe . The difference was in the narrative and less detail in the overall presentation of the story unfolding over the weekend. Mind you, we didn’t see all of it, and it was a fantastic happening for Liverpool City.
